The Ideal Series – Buckskin – by Orren Mixer
Show actual painting + image of Orren Mixer from the packaging
A buckskin is a bay horse with a cream gene that dilutes their hair to a rich caramel color with black or dark brown points. Buckskins can be found in numerous horse breeds, including American Quarter Horses, Andalusians, Mustangs, Morgans, Tennessee Walking Horses, and Welsh ponies and cobs. This distinctive color may vary from yellow to dark gold. These beautiful shades have made buckskins a popular choice for film and television. Popular Hollywood buckskins include Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Dale Evans’ horse, Buttermilk, and “Buck,” Ben Cartwright’s horse on Bonanza.
Founded in 1971, the International Buckskin Horse Association is the world’s largest registry for horses of this color. "The Buckskin" by Orren Mixer was commissioned in 1996 and unveiled at the 1998 IBHA World Championship Show. The painting depicts a buckskin stallion with nine mares and nine foals, illustrating the various shades of the buckskin, dun, red dun and grulla horses accepted for IBHA registration. The original painting is currently displayed at the AQHA Heritage Center and Museum in Amarillo, TX.
